Some of my checkup numbers are on the low side since going vegetarian — is that normal?

Both my total protein and liver enzymes (transaminases) are near the lower limit of normal. The doctor said it's not a big deal, but I'm still a bit nervous.

Low transaminases usually aren't a problem in themselves — you could even read it as your liver having a lighter metabolic load. The direction that actually warrants attention is high, not low. Total protein sitting near the lower limit but still within the normal range is better understood by looking at the albumin/globulin ratio alongside it — just fixating on the words 'a bit low' can scare you unnecessarily. I'd suggest going over the full report with your doctor in person, focusing on things like anemia, B12, and vitamin D — those are the markers that are actually more relevant for vegetarians to watch. A normal range has an upper and lower bound by definition; sitting near the lower end doesn't mean something's wrong.

One small tip to add — try to stick with the same hospital, or even the same checkup package, every year. That way, after a few years you'll be able to see the actual trend in your numbers instead of getting anxious over each isolated reading every single time. As long as the values are fluctuating within a stable normal range, there's not much to worry about — it's a value that keeps consistently moving in one direction that's actually worth paying attention to. Going over the trend with your doctor will give you a much clearer picture.
