Why Vegetarians Must Supplement Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal foods and bacterial fermentation products, so both vegan and most lacto-ovo vegetarian diets struggle to provide it reliably — making fortified foods or supplements a necessity.
What Makes B12 Different
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is synthesized by bacteria and occurs naturally in animal foods like eggs, dairy, and meat. Plants themselves don't produce B12, and the trace amounts occasionally found on soil or plant surfaces are too inconsistent and unreliable to serve as a basis for meal planning.
The Consequences of Deficiency Are Not to Be Underestimated
B12 plays a role in red blood cell formation and maintaining the nervous system. Long-term deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, memory decline, and other neurological symptoms — and if this kind of nerve damage goes on too long, some of it may not be fully reversible. Research shows that among long-term vegans who don't supplement, the rate of marginal or outright B12 deficiency can be quite high, which is a clear signal that supplementation isn't optional.
How Vegetarians Should Approach It
- Vegans: Must get a steady supply of B12 through fortified foods (nutritional yeast, fortified soy milk or cereal) or supplements — no exceptions.
- Lacto-ovo vegetarians: Regular, adequate intake of eggs and dairy may provide some B12, but many people's actual intake isn't consistent enough, so periodic testing or preventive supplementation is still advisable.
- Adults are generally advised to get 2.4 micrograms a day, with higher needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
One Clear Recommendation
This is one of the few nutrients in a vegetarian diet that can't be solved through food-combining tricks alone. All long-term vegetarians should treat a B12 supplement or fortified food as a standard part of daily life, rather than waiting for symptoms to appear before taking it seriously. A serum B12 test is inexpensive and well worth adding to routine checkups.
