How the Two Are Connected
B12 and folate both participate in homocysteine metabolism and DNA synthesis. When folate intake is adequate or even excessive, it can correct the anemia (enlarged red blood cells) caused by B12 deficiency, but it cannot stop the neurological damage that B12 deficiency causes. Dark leafy greens, legumes, and whole grains are all rich in folate, so vegetarians generally get plenty of it — sometimes more than enough.
