- Chlorogenic acid in coffee: works through a similar mechanism and also lowers iron absorption
- Phytic acid: concentrated in grain bran and legume skins, it chelates iron ions
- High-dose calcium taken with meals: large calcium supplements taken alongside iron-rich food compete for the same absorption pathway
- Cocoa polyphenols: dark chocolate and cocoa drinks likewise contain substantial polyphenol content
Simple Ways to Manage This
Separate tea or coffee from meals by more than an hour — that way you can still enjoy your drink without undermining iron absorption. Soaking legumes for 4 to 8 hours beforehand and moderately fermenting grains (as with sourdough bread) both effectively reduce phytic acid content. If you want tea or coffee after a meal, it's better to push it to the gap before your next one.
No Need to Overthink It
These inhibiting factors matter, but they're relative — they don't mean these foods and drinks can never be consumed together. As long as you space things out in time and pair iron-rich meals with vitamin C, most healthy people don't need to worry about this excessively. The people who really need to manage this carefully are those already diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia; healthy people who occasionally have tea or coffee with a meal shouldn't feel too guilty about it.
