Global fishery resources face the serious challenge of overfishing, with populations of many commercially important species already in significant decline and the balance of marine ecosystems under strain as a result.

Compared with land-based livestock farming, the ecological impact of ocean fishing is often underestimated by the public. Numerous international fishery assessments show that a considerable share of the world's fish stocks are already overfished or approaching that threshold, and catches of commercially important species in some traditional fishing grounds once rich in resources have fallen well below historical levels.

The Collateral Damage of Certain Fishing Methods

Beyond the direct decline in fish populations, some high-intensity fishing methods — bottom trawling, for instance — can cause destructive damage to seafloor habitats and are accompanied by "bycatch," in which large numbers of non-target species are caught and discarded. This kind of collateral damage is often harder to repair in the short term than a simple decline in fish numbers.

Reconsidering the Sustainability of Seafood

Facing this pressure on marine ecosystems, consumers have several possible responses:

  • Learning about and choosing seafood from sustainably certified fisheries
  • Reducing how often they consume species already under heavy population pressure
  • Paying attention to marine protected areas and fishing-moratorium policies, and understanding the ecological logic behind them
  • Using plant-based protein as a partial substitute to reduce reliance on wild fishery resources

The ocean may appear vast and boundless, but its carrying capacity is just as finite. The lesson of overfishing reminds us that our consumption of seafood, too, needs to be guided by a sense of sustainability.
