Although methane persists in the atmosphere for a shorter time than carbon dioxide, its warming power over a comparable timescale is far greater — and the digestive systems of ruminants like cattle and sheep are, in fact, one of the major sources of human-caused methane emissions.

Why Ruminants "Produce Gas"

Ruminants rely on microbes in their stomachs to ferment plant fiber and extract nutrients, a process known as "enteric fermentation" that produces methane as a byproduct, released into the atmosphere mainly through belching. The larger the scale of farming, the more substantial this total becomes — and it is a key reason why the carbon footprint of ruminant products like beef and lamb is typically much higher than that of poultry or pork.

Multiple Approaches to Tackling Methane Emissions

To address methane from ruminants, industry and academia are exploring a range of solutions:
