No Vegetarian Options at the Cafeteria, Delivery Too Pricey: What to Do When Choices Are Limited
When circumstances just aren't ideal, a change of approach beats gritting your teeth and pushing through.
Acknowledge the Constraint Instead of Just Pushing Through
Some environments genuinely offer few vegetarian options — cafeterias in remote areas, or delivery platforms with limited choices in some smaller cities. Acknowledging that this real constraint exists is more constructive than blaming yourself for not sticking with it.
Practical Approaches
- Bring your own food: even something as simple as rice with braised dried tofu and greens fits your choices better than settling for a meat dish
- Stock up on shelf-stable backups: vacuum-packed braised tofu, nuts, quick-cooking noodles — enough to get you through days when options are extremely limited
- Speak up to your cafeteria or regular delivery vendors: after hearing the request enough times, vendors may genuinely add more options
Allow Yourself Temporary Compromises
If current circumstances genuinely can't support the ideal, allow yourself to step back for a while — accepting an ovo-lacto diet instead of strict veganism, say — and adjust back once conditions improve. That's not failure. That's being practical.
A Note for Beginners
Environmental constraints are a real problem, not a personal failing. Chipping away at them with concrete methods is far more useful than self-criticism. If you're stuck in a limited environment long-term, consider seeking out a local vegetarian support group — members can share which delivery vendors are willing to accommodate you and which shops carry suitable ingredients. Collective know-how tends to get you there much faster than figuring it all out alone.
